Terms of Service

These terms are an agreement between you and [operator’s legal name] (“we”, “us”), who runs We Were Here. By signing in or signing the globe, you agree to them. Please also read our Privacy Policy and Refund Policy.

1. Who can sign

• You must be at least 13 years old, or at least 16 if you live in the European Union, the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom.
• We ask for your birth month and year once, after you first sign in. We use them only for that check and don’t store them.
• If we learn that someone below these ages has signed, we will remove their signature and account.

2. Your account

You sign in with a Google account (other sign-in options may be added). You’re responsible for activity on your account. Don’t use someone else’s account, and don’t create accounts to get around a ban.

3. What you’re buying

A signature is a piece of styled text (with optional details and, on some tiers, photos) placed on the globe for the current calendar year. It is digital content, delivered as soon as your payment is confirmed.

Prices are in US dollars. [State whether prices include sales tax or VAT.] Each payment buys one signature.

• Placement. You choose a country, and optionally a region or city. Your signature is placed at a random point inside that area, never at your exact location.
• Yearly globes. Each calendar year has its own globe. When a year ends, its globe is archived and stays viewable, and a new globe opens.

4. Your signature stays forever unless you request removal

We don’t expire signatures. Your signature stays on its year’s globe, and in the archive afterwards, unless:

• you delete it, or delete your account (see below);
• we remove it because it breaks these terms (section 7); or
• we stop running We Were Here. We intend to keep the globes online permanently. If we ever have to shut down, we’ll give at least [30] days’ notice on the site.

Removing your information. On your signature’s page you can use “Remove my info” at any time. That wipes your city, birth year, message and photos while keeping the signature and display name on the globe.

Deleting your signature. On your signature’s page, “Delete my signature” permanently removes it, with its photos and details, after you confirm.

Deleting your account. On your Account page, “Delete my account” permanently removes all your signatures, photos and account details after you confirm. If you can’t sign in, email [contact email] and we’ll do it for you.

Deletion can’t be undone and doesn’t entitle you to a refund. We keep a record of the payment, as our Privacy Policy explains.

5. Editing

• You can change your signature’s text, style, message and birth year for 15 minutes after it’s placed. After that, the content is locked.
• Photos (Plus and Premium) can be added during those 15 minutes and deleted at any time.
• Privacy settings (showing your city, age, photos and message, and private mode) can be changed at any time.

6. Payment and refunds

Payments are processed by Stripe. All sales are final. Before paying, you confirm the following:

I want my signature placed on the globe immediately. I understand that because it’s delivered right away, I lose my 14-day right to cancel, and that all sales are final (no refunds).

If you live in the EU, EEA or UK, this means you lose your 14-day right of withdrawal once your signature is placed. Full details, and the limited cases where we do refund, are in our Refund Policy.

7. Content rules

Everything you add (signature text, display name, message and photos) must not:

• be hateful, harassing, sexually explicit, violent or threatening;
• impersonate another person, brand or organization, or suggest an endorsement that doesn’t exist;
• share anyone’s personal information, including your own contact details;
• advertise, spam, or link to other services;
• include photos of other people without their permission, or any photo you don’t have the right to share;
• break any law.

Typed text is checked automatically for offensive language. Anyone signed in can report a signature. We may hide or remove content that breaks these rules, remove the signature entirely, and ban accounts that break them repeatedly, without a refund.

8. Your content

You keep ownership of what you add. You give us a worldwide, royalty-free license to store, display and reproduce it for as long as your signature is on We Were Here, including on the globe, your signature’s page, the yearly archives, and share images of your signature. You confirm you have the rights to everything you upload.

9. Our service

We Were Here, its design and its code belong to us. Don’t scrape the site, try to get around its limits or security, or interfere with other people using it. We may change or improve features over time.

10. Disclaimers and liability

We work to keep We Were Here available and your signature intact, but the service is provided “as is” and may occasionally be unavailable. To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer protection laws that can’t be excluded.

11. Suspension and termination

You can stop using We Were Here at any time. We may suspend or close accounts that break these terms.

12. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. The version and effective date are shown at the top. Significant changes will be announced on the site before they apply. The version you agreed to when paying is recorded with your payment.

13. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of [country / state]. If you’re a consumer living in the EU, EEA or UK, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of your country of residence, and can bring claims in its courts.
